Open Letter – October 31st 2013

October 31st 2013

To the People of Clondalkin, Our Supporters and Sponsors,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who took part in our 10k ‘Defibz 4 Kidz’ Fun Run/Walk on Saturday October 19th in Corkagh Park. It was fantastic that so many people turned out to support this initiative. To see hundreds of yellow jerseys running, jogging and walking through our local park was something which will live in our memory for many years to come.

Last June we decided, along with the Laurels Charity Crew, to embark on an ambitious project to place a defibrillator in every school in Clondalkin. We discovered that out of twenty nine schools in the area only seven had access to a defibrillator. Given the number of schoolchildren in Clondalkin, attending both primary and secondary schools, this gave rise to serious concerns.

Over the past couple of months the Foundation visited each of the twenty nine schools and spoke with teachers and pupils about the importance of having a defibrillator close by in case of an emergency. A defibrillator is a device that literally saves lives on a daily basis. It must be used on a person within three to five minutes to increase their chance of survival. Statistically the use of a defibrillator can increase a person’s chances by over 60%.

We would like to offer a special thank you to the Laurels Charity Crew for their expertise and professionalism in organising the event. In particular it would not have taken place without the hard work and dedication of Denis McCarthy, Ellen McLoughlin, Paddy Price and Jeff Kernan. They are a special bunch and we hope that the local community continue to support them in their future charity work. If you would like to know more about the Laurels Charity Crew you can find them on Facebook and Twitter and at laurelscharitycrew.com.

Finally, we would not have been able to do this without your continued support. Your participation in this event will ensure that our schools are a safer place for all children in Clondalkin. We hope that our success in this venture will encourage you to continue to support us in the future.

Once again many thanks,
Philip, Gemma Carr and the Ciarán Carr Foundation Committee
